As the daylight hours get shorter and the cold weather sets in, the cost of electricity to run your home can really add up.

For the fifth year in a row, Fortis Alberta and Home Hardware are tag teaming in a campaign that encourages people to reduce electricity consumption.

Natasha Russell, Fortis Alberta Communications Advisor, says saving energy has some key benefits.

“For one it's important for the environment and two it is good for the bill. I think in times right now we always want to see where we can save and so whenever you can do that it's always a great thing.”

Since household lighting can make up about 20% of your home's electricity bill, switching from incandescent bulbs to LED bulbs can really make a difference in the long run.

While LED bulbs are generally more costly upfront, the energy efficiency program will keep some money in your wallet.

“LEDs we know last for at least 20 plus years and the bulb that we are giving away this year is dimmable and they are valued at approximately $22.00 each.”

October is Energy Awareness month and hopefully the campaign will raise awareness, educate, and provide simple and effective solutions when it comes to saving energy.

You can get your free bulb on Saturday, October 22 at Cochrane Home Hardware. To find out more energy efficiency tips check here.
