The hard-working volunteers at the Cochrane Food Bank now have a little more elbow room.

A brand new mezzanine has been added to bay 6, adding more square footage to the space.

Cochrane Activette Co-Chair, Charlene Jeffery's said the extra real estate is greatly needed with the constant rise in demand they're faced with.

"It definitely gives us more space below and more space above, and private offices that we didn't have before. It also allows us to expand our school program. It's definitely beneficial."

Volunteers meet weekly to pack school lunches for locals who would otherwise go without.

Jeffery's said they're celebrating 45 years in the community this year, and they're always looking for new faces to join the team.

"We have lots of volunteer opportunities. Becoming an Activette you will have other opportunities to help in the community in other ways, not just the food bank or the Clothesline."

The Activettes provide support at numerous events in town throughout the year. They recently attended Footstock, and they're set to be at the Canada Day celebrations on July 1.

Every year during the holidays, the Activettes run their Share your Christmas program which ensures families in the area can enjoy the holiday season. The group handed out a record 338 hampers in 2022.

The Cochrane Activettes have been helping Cochrane and area individuals and families in need since 1978.

The non-profit organization is made up of female volunteers in the community who are dedicated to making Cochrane and the surrounding area a better place for all residents.
