The Gens exploded with four goals in the first, then followed up with one in both the second and third to take a 6-0 win in the opening game of their HJHL semifinal series against the Medicine Hat Cubs.

Gens head coach Kurtis Jones says it was almost an identical game to the last one played between these two teams. He says the Cubs came out with a physical game, but faltered when the Gens pushed back.

He says the team is playing with confidence. The Gens have only lost one game since the beginning of the New Year.

"If we play like this all the way, look out," says Jones.

The Cubs are having difficulty getting one past Erik Garber. They haven't scored on 61 shots taken in the last two games.

Garber, who was also named the first star for the second consecutive game, says he thought he played well and was helped by the solid play of the team in front of him

Caden Cudleigh hit the back of the net twice for the Gens. So did Dean Olenyk, who cashed in on passes from linemate Patrick Forde.

Gens captain Brandon Aab and defenceman Jordan Marks teamed up for the other two goals. Aab redirected a Marks' blast from the point. Aab returned the favour by feeding a pass to Marks.

Aab was also awarded a penalty shot for being muscled by a Ciubs defenceman in the third period. He failed to capitalize on the opportunity, but by then the game was out of reach for the Cubs.

Game Two goes tonight in Medicine Hat at 8 p.m.

In the other south division semifinal, the Okotoks Bisons beat the High River Flyers, 2-0. Their second matchup also goes tonight.

The High River Flyers broke the trend by taking it to the Coaldale Copperheads 5-2 in Coaldale in game five of their quarterfinal matchup. Until that point, home ice was the deciding factor.

In the north division, the Mountainview Colts have taken the first two games of their seven-game series against the Airdrie Techmation Thunder.

The Sylvan Lake Wranglers won 7-6 against the Red Deer Vipers in overtime. Game two is in Sylvan Lake tonight.
