The Grand Valley Safari Club continued to support worthy causes with its 17th annual dinner fundraiser, Jan. 25.

Annually the event raises about $30,000 to support local causes.

That's quite a step forward from its humble roots as a group of guys who got together to share some chili one night.

Now it sells out the Cochrane Events Centre every year. Government certified elk, bison, turkey and boar is served for the meal. That is followed by a series of raffles for over $21,000 in prizes plus live auctions

"We're a group of outdoorsmen and women who come out, have some fun, and support a lot of causes," explains chair Kevin Firkus.

For many, it's an annual affair, including several people from outside of the area.

"We have groups that have come to support us for probably the last 10 years from northern B.C. and northern Alberta. It an annual trip for a bunch of them."

Through funds raised, they've helped many families with medical emergencies who need quick help. They've also supported school outdoors programs, assisted youth with the costs associated with archery and other causes as they arise.

"The Veterans Hunters was a big project for us this year. We joined forces with the veterans because we figured it was a good cause, and fit right in with our group's vision."

Firkus says the fundraiser will continue into the foreseeable future.

"We're just going to keep it going. It's a fantastic deal. The whole group that puts it on is very proud to do it, and very happy to help support projects in the community."
