Cochrane Fire Services will be oiling up the griddle this Saturday (September 9) for the 5th annual firefighter's breakfast.

Uniformed fire services personnel prove they can not only keep the community of Cochrane safe but they can cook up and serve a mean flapjack.

Captain Jory Jenson, says besides a great excuse to bring the community together it allows residents to connect with the department on a positive note. "It is a chance for the community to come and talk to us, see us, and visit when you're not having a bad day."

Besides filling up on a good breakfast you get a behind the scenes glimpse of other duties fire services perform. "In the past, we've done some vehicular extrication demos and this year we're going to do a high angle pick off. So if you had a trapped window washer or someone trapped on the side of a mountain we're going to have our rope rescue team come pick them off the wall."

Jenson is hopeful the community is aware that the 20 full-time staff and 30 part-timers perform many calls of duty. "I think when you think of the fire department you think of the obvious like if your house was on fire but we are sort of one call. People can call us from anything from slope rescue, water/ice rescue, motor vehicle collisions, and vehicle extrication. There is quite a range of things we can do and that is why we showcase there is a lot more than just houses and fire."

Giving back to the community is not something new for the department, in fact, fire services host many fundraisers benefitting the local area such as the Cochrane Food Bank, Veteran's Food Bank, and collectively sponsoring families for Christmas.

Whether you're  5 or 85, it seems everyone has a great time at the community gathering. Face painting, bouncy castles, tours, and an opportunity to sit in the truck are all highlights of the day.

Breakfast will be served from 9 am until 11 am and over 1000 attendees are expected. While breakfast is free, donations will be gratefully accepted for the Cochrane Firefighters Community Foundation.
