It's hard to believe that 15 years ago, Cochrane was forced to cancel its seniors bonspiel due to a lack of interest.

Out of the ashes rose the Super Seniors Squares Spiel, which is entering its 13th year. It runs from Nov. 22 to 26 at the Cochrane Curling Centre.

Architect Doug Campbell anticipates they'll have upwards of 40 teams this year in this player-friendly bonspiel. Fundamental to its success is how it matches players of similar ages and skill levels to compete in both competitive and social divisions.

Ages currently range from 50 to 88 years old. All teams are guaranteed four games, and most of the play is during the day. There are men's, women's, open, and mixed divisions.

They welcome people to join the list of players who want to play but don't have a full team of their own.

"Some of them are new people that have just arrived in Cochrane, or they're coming from Canmore, Airdrie, or Calgary," says Campbell. We match them up age-wise and talent-wise to form more teams, and that usually works really well."

curling chatThere's always time to share a few jokes or stories while you're on the ice or at the Saturday night social.

There's a highly sociable function on Saturday night.

"We always have a big banquet for something like 160 people and we always have some fun entertainment. They haven't been in Hollywood or Las Vegas, but they keep our crowds pretty happy with a mixture of jokes, songs, and sing-alongs, so we do our best to make it an entertaining evening."
