There are still some spots to be filled on the team of volunteers that have made Footstock a huge success story.

The return of the in-person event is this Sunday and has attracted nearly 575 participants.

Race director Meredith McMorran says they require race marshalls and transition volunteers for the kids' triathlon. They also need race marshalls for the foot races to help direct turnaround points and assist at road crossings.

To volunteer, email footstockrwc@gmail.com.

The races start at 7:30 a.m. from the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre for all of the foot races--5k, 10k, 18k relay and 18k solo.

The kids' triathlon begins at 10:30 a.m.

There are 15 teams in the second 18k Corporate/Family Relay that sees runners of three-member teams complete one of three distances,10k, 5k, or 3k. Fourteen of those teams will be trying to unseat "Chafing the Dream" of Garmin, who won last year and are the presenting sponsor of the race.

"Their team managed to win the relay last year and they have entered a team again, so a little friendly competition is great," says McMorran "While we'd love seeing the trophy go to Garmin in the inaugural year, we'd love to see the trophy make the rounds to other corporations or businesses or other groups within the town."

McMorran invites people to come to cheer on the runners and take in the festive atmosphere at the start/finish line.

"They'll be lots to see and do for both participants and spectators with activities around our festival finish line area," she says.

They'll be plenty of vendors and free coffee available, courtesy of Tim Hortons. The Lions Club will be preparing a pancake breakfast for the participants, and it will also be available for purchase by spectators.

Registration is slightly lower than the last live event held three years ago.

"I think people were out of the habit of doing Footstock every early June, so hopefully we'll all have such a great time that it will put it back on people's radar for next year."

Footstock is also an opportunity to rack up the minutes to help Cochrane become the Most Active Community in Canada in Participaction's Community Better Challenge.
