There's been a strong response to the Christmas sled being given away by Cochrane Toyota with the help of Santa.

You could feel Santa beaming through the phone line when he provided us a brief update on the response to the program, designed to provide Christmas joy to deserving preschool-age children in these challenging times.

"I believe we're right around 270 nominations already, and we have room for a few more," says Santa.

Despite being an extremely hectic time of the year, Jolly Ol' St. Nick has marked Dec. 20th on his calendar to spend in Cochrane.

He'll be at Cochrane Toyota and is pleased to be joined by Mrs. Claus and Mayor Jeff Genung, who will be assisting as head elf.

Nominations continue to be accepted by Cochrane Toyota and are being reviewed by members of the Young Professionals Rotary Club.

The sleds are manufactured by Gloco, a leader in quality wooden snow sleds in Germany since 1919. The beechwood sleds have galvanized steel runners sit under timber bottom runners, forming a fast gliding sledge that’s easy to steer.

Knowing the trying times for local families in the area, Alex Baum, dealer principal of Cochrane Toyota, purchased the 350 quality German sleds at an auction to help.

"I don't know the whole story of why so many sleds became available but what a great opportunity," says Baum. "Smiles on a child's face who normally wouldn't get one, or may not get one... that's what we've got to do."
