Let the games begin!

The opening ceremonies are behind us, and tomorrow the first day of the competition gets underway at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Over the next two weeks, 128 athletes will be competing for Canada in 23 sports.

That includes para triathlete Stefan Daniel, who is striving to turn the silver medal he won in Rio into gold. He's competing in the PTS5 (mild impairment) event on Sat. Aug. 28.

Leading up to the Paralympics, he believed Germany's Martin Schulz and Great Britain's George Peasgood would be among those offering stiff competition.

In 2016, Daniel became the first Canadian triathlete ever to win a medal at the Paralympic Summer Games, when the sport made its debut in Rio de Janeiro. Schulz won gold.

“I’m really excited to be named to my second Paralympic team,” says Daniel. “I think I’ve become a much more mature and experienced athlete than I was in Rio. I’ve been working really hard for Tokyo for five years now, and I’m going to do my absolute best to bring a gold medal home for Canada.”

Competitors swim 750m, cycle 20k, and run 5k.
