The Cochrane Piranhas competed in their fifth meet of the season last Saturday (July 13).

Fourty-two swimmers represented the Piranhas at the Calgary Triton’s 48th Invitational Swim meet, and Breanna Hendriks, Head Coach, shares they swimmers did an awesome job. "We had a lot of little, little guys do 25 metre Breaststroke and complete it without getting disqualified for the first time, so that is a really big deal for them. Catherine Swedlo did a 1500 metre swim for the first time. And, we had a lot of older kids get their best times, even though they were quite tired."

This was the first meet for the Cochrane Piranhas since the end of June, but that doesn't mean the swimmers have been taking it easy, says Hendriks. "We have been in a really heavy training mode, especially the gold level swimmers. I think on Thursday (July 11) morning they did just about 4,000 metres, and so they are tired."

With only a couple of meets left in the regular competitive season, Hendriks is pushing the swimmers to achieve more and not less. "I want to try and get in as much volume and aerobic work in as we move toward Regionals, as Regionals is pretty close. As we get closer, I will start working on more sprinty, high-intensity work."

Even though Hendriks has a lot of young swimmers this season, she is pleased with their progress and how quickly their skills are, and continuing to develop.

Training will remain fairly intense until just after the long weekend in August. "At that point, we'll drop in metres a bit and just have a rest period, especially for the older ones. We'll continue to work on technique as well, and getting those little guys ready for Fly and IM as well. There is lots of good stuff coming."

This Saturday (July 20) the Piranhas will travel to Canmore for another swim meet, followed by a two day meet in Calgary on July 26th and 27th to wrap up their regular season competitions.
