If you happen to get pulled over by police or RCMP you’re expected to be able to provide your registration and proof of insurance.

With new rules introduced yesterday, you’ll no longer have to provide the physical pink slip.

Instead, the province is allowing insurance companies to issue digital copies of insurance documents to drivers.

It’s a move supported by the industry. Celyeste Power, vice-president of the Western Insurance Bureau of Canada, says it’s something they’ve been advocating for years.

“We are pleased to welcome it because we can finally start to meet the needs and demands of our consumers,” Power explains. “Over 70 per cent of Albertans feel that insurance should offer more innovation and choice on how they should receive their documents.”

Rob Jesso, with AMA Insurance, says the changes are all about meeting the needs of customers and bringing insurance into the modern age.

“We believe insurance should be simple and understandable and we also believe insurance should be modern and innovative,” said Jesso. “There’s [no] reason why consumers shouldn’t have the same many modern conveniences with their insurance, as they do with so many of the other products that they buy.”

Drivers will be allowed to choose whether they want a digital copy of their insurance or the physical pink slip.

The move follows similar changes in Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

This is the latest change made in the Kenney Government's drive to reduce red tape. The province says it has received more than 2,400 submissions on its red tape reduction website.
