The installation of public art at the civic plaza by The Station could be one step closer after Monday's town council meeting.

Community Services director Mitchell Hamm says the committee's recommendations will be presented to council at its Sept. 25 meeting.

He says even if they receive the thumbs up, there's still plenty of work ahead.

"We have to consult with all of the artists and make sure that everyone understands the objective and then the installation process will be between now and March. Then we'll hopefully be aiming for an unveiling in March 2024."

No visuals of the art will be made available until that unveiling.

It's been a robust selection process that has seen the volunteer committee already contribute over 360 volunteer hours says Hamm.

Three spots have been designated in the new civic plaza by The Station on Railway St. Each has power, internet access, and a multimedia box should it be required by any of the art selected.

The Station itself already offers free Wi-Fi access.

This will be the first public art of its kind in Cochrane. Typically, it has been in the form of murals.

"It's certainly different than what we've done in the past, and so I'm very excited to see how the public receives this and how we'll shape these types of decisions going forward around that reception."

The project was made possible by a grant from the federal Canada Community Revitalization Fund.
