Fifth Avenue, Railway St., River Ave., and Griffin Rd.: the planning and redevelopment of these four major corridors are important to the future of Cochrane.

The town is seeking public input on a draft corridor plan until this Friday. Feedback to an online survey will be accepted until June 25. A one-hour webinar is being offered tomorrow (Tuesday, June 22) in three timeslots: 9 a.m., 12 noon, and 7 p.m.

Town officials say the feedback will be used to refine the plan to ensure the objectives and policies for future growth and change are supported by the public, residents, and stakeholders. The final plan will then be presented to town council for consideration.

The plan will be a vision of how these corridors might function for people, bikes, transit, and cars in the future, while also adding to the character of downtown Cochrane.

Mayor Jeff Genung says the corridor study has been underway for some time. The project kicked off in August 2019, and pop-up and online engagements were undertaken that year. The project was paused in 2020 to instead focus on the pandemic response.

"We want to have a real understanding, and look at them through a planning lens, so we're deliberate in the future in creating the look and feel that everybody would be on board with in the community."

"The time is now. Before things start to develop and take place, we don't want to piecemeal these areas because of their significance. We want to make sure we follow a well put together plan."

He says these routes are the face of the community, and the town wants to leave a great impression.
