The sad news is elders are vulnerable to abuse. The good news is Cochrane has created a communitywide support system to help its victims.

Today, June 14, is World Elder Abuse Day. Around the globe, it's used as a day to create further awareness of this multi-layered issue.

In Cochrane, presentations begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, followed by a luncheon and an annual awareness walk.

This year's theme is financial abuse. A representative of ATB Financial will be speaking on the topic. As well, Jenny-Lyn Keene, of the Western Rocky View Resource Centre, will be providing an update on Cochrane's Community-Led Elder Abuse Response (CLEAR).

Participants are encouraged to wear purple, the colour of support and awareness adopted locally.

Through CLEAR, an extensive community-wide support network has been established for those impacted. It's an issue that can affect all walks of life in countless ways, including financial, sexual, psychological and neglect. Shockingly. research indicates one in 10 seniors are victims.

In case of emergencies and immediate danger, it is recommended you call 9-1-1. Otherwise, you can reach out to the Western Rocky View Family and Community Resource Centre at 403-851-2250. After hours, you can reach out to the Elder Abuse Resource Line at 403-705-3250.
