Rocky View County (RVC) has announced that as of yesterday (Monday), they have lifted their fire advisory for the whole county.

While other areas are lifting restrictions, Airdrie is still under a fire restriction while Cochrane is under a fire advisory.

Dave McMahon, Deputy Fire Chief with Rocky View County talked about the fire advisory being lifted.

"We had a fire ban and a fire advisory in effect and we've just rescinded the fire advisory due to the cooler temperatures that we're currently experiencing, and the forecasted cooler temperatures. The amount of precipitation we got wasn't just in one localized area, we luckily enjoyed precipitation across our region."

Once winter ended RVC saw extremely warm temperatures and drought-like conditions, which were also seen across the province which caused the fire ban to be set in place in the county. Luckily with this level of rain, the fire advisory is lifted just in time for Canada Day.

"We have applications in for firework permits from commercial stakeholders that we want to support to make sure our community can enjoy firework displays."

According to McMahon, June is the month that Alberta tends to get precipitation and they hope that's a continued trend. When asked about what would have to be done for RVC to be put back under a fire advisory or anything like that, certain criteria must be met.

"If we go back into extreme temperatures, we have long periods of that precipitation, and the ground moisture levels change to that, where it's going to promote combustion we would look to see if it's appropriate for us to put a fire advisory back on."

RVC and the surrounding area have seen a fair amount of thunderstorms recently, of course with those storms there is always potential for lightning to strike and cause fires.

"The more rain we get, it's reduced and it could stay localized and it wouldn't spread, where the danger comes in with lightning strikes is when they happen in periods of no precipitation and dry ground weather. So right now it's gonna be extremely low that it would happen and be sustained."

The provincial state of emergency was lifted June 3.
