The Rocky View Schools Board of Trustees have voted to change the 2021/22 school year calendar to observe the new federal holiday.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will take place on Thursday, September 30.

The Government of Canada declared the day to commemorate the history and ongoing trauma caused by residential schools. It is a day to honour survivors, families and communities who suffer the pain and loss from the dark period in Canadian history.

RVS said in a letter to parents and guardians that they apologize for the short notice but Thursday, September 30, 2021, will be classified as a non-operational day with no in-class or online learning that day.

The letter signed by Board Chair, Fiona Gilbert and Superintendent Greg Luterback said, "As a public education institution, we believe it is an important step on our journey towards truth and reconciliation to recognize the history and legacy of residential schools in Canada."

The revised 2021/22 school year calendar is available on the RVS website.
