Residential areas will be buzzing with excitement this evening as thousands of kids head out for an evening of trick-or-treating.

Hoping that everyone has a safe and enjoyable evening tonight, Cochrane RCMP, Constable Kary Moore gives a few pointers to motorists, parents, and kids.

Before heading out the door tonight, Cst. Moore reminds youngsters to dress for the weather and make sure they are well seen. "Trick or treat in groups with safe adults with you, and wear reflective clothing or have something reflective on you."

With some youngsters headed out as early as 5 pm, Cst. Moore shares motorists need to extra cautious throughout the evening and have their headlights on. "A reminder to motorists to please slow down in the residential areas and everywhere as it is quite often that kids when trick or treating don't pay attention to traffic and dart out in between vehicles."

Upon returning home, although not common, parents/caregivers should double check treats to ensure they have not been tampered with. "I haven't heard of any complaints, however, I wouldn't be complacent I would continue to check the children's candy just to ensure they aren't consuming any open packages. Just throw them away and don't consume those."

While it will be business as usual for Cochrane RCMP from a crime-fighting perspective this evening, Constable Moore says if you see a police car tonight...she knows a little secret. "We will be out and I encourage kids or adults alike if they see a police car to flag them down because I have some knowledge that they have candy in their vehicles with them and treats to hand out, so by all means just flag them down."
