Two days before the Court of Queen's Bench judicial review on the sanctions placed on three councillors, another call has come for the resignation of Samanntha Wright by Rocky View County council.

The RVC Div. 8 councillor (Bearspaw) is one of the owners of a property with a tax debt. That, says RVC, makes her ineligible for office by the rules set out in the Municipal Government Act and Local Authorities Election Act.

An RVC news release states the issue was uncovered last week during an annual process of registering tax recovery notifications on properties that are two years in tax arrears.

She is a co-owner of a residential property that is in arrears $10,572.22 in taxes and penalties from 2018 and 2019.

A special meeting of RVC council was held Jan. 20. They received advice from legal counsel on how to proceed.

Councillor Wright had no advance knowledge of the purpose of the special meeting and caught off guard by the proceedings.

Coming out of the in-camera session, she requested a postponed of the decision until Jan. 28 so she could seek legal counsel. It was denied.

That provoked the ire of Councillors Crystal Kissel and Kevin Hanson.

"If you sat in this chair, with the same issue, maybe a little grace might be what you'd wish for from your fellow councillors," said Kissel. "I'm appalled that you won't give a week. It doesn't change anything. It gives some grace."

Councillor Hanson said the decision was extreme.

"Time to reconsider perhaps would be time well spent, considering the choices you are making and the seriousness of your choices. I think making those types of choices, I would have a hard time sleeping at night."

The vote passed 5-3 to demand Wright resign by Jan. 28. Reeve Greg Boehlke and councillors Kim McKylor, Al Schule, Jerry Gautreau, Daniel Henn were in favour. Councillors Kevin Hanson, Crystal Kissel, and Wright were opposed. Councillor Mark Kamachi was absent.

"We have no choice but to again ask her to resign, and to apply to the court should she refuse," says Reeve Boehlke.

Just last week, RVC council sought her resignation for participated in public hearings, discussions, and votes concerning a property immediately adjacent to land she owns with her husband.

Wright refused to resign, saying she did her due diligence, and claims she does not have a pecuniary interest in the matter.

The county is said it will pursue the matter with the Court of Queen's.

Wright is one of the three RVC councillors taking Rocky View County to court in hopes of overturning current sanctions limiting their roles on the council.

Kissel and Hanson are the other councillors sanctioned.
