Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for parts of southern Alberta as well as a wind warning for areas in and around Cochrane.

A cold front is expected to bring rain, flurries and weak thunderstorms with strong winds from northwest to southeast across the province starting Sunday morning.

Periods of heavy snow coupled with strong winds will result in quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

Strong winds gusting up to 100 km/h are expected to develop Saturday night along the eastern slopes of the rocky mountains.

These strong winds from the west will move eastward Sunday morning through the Calgary area.

The wind gusts are expected to last throughout the day Sunday before easing up Sunday evening.

In addition, strong northerly winds are expected to develop that may gust up to 90 km/h, especially in areas east of the QE2.

Environment Canada is warning that these strong winds could cause damage to buildings such as to roof shingles and windows.

Areas included in the wind warning are.

  • Mountain View Co. near Carstairs and Stirlingville
  • Mountain View Co. near Cremona and Water Valley
  • Mountain View Co. near Olds and Didsbury
  • Mountain View Co. near Sundre
  • Rocky View Co. near Airdrie and Crossfield
