Representatives of the Alberta Government and Alberta First Nations met yesterday in Edmonton to lay the groundwork for what they hope will open the door for improved Indigenous participation in major energy projects.

In his opening remarks at the June 10 meeting, Premier Jason Kenney confirmed the Indigenous Opportunities Corporation (IOC) will be created to provide $1 billion in backstops and loan guarantees for Indigenous investment in energy projects. It was among the promises made by the United Conservative Party during its election campaign.

Kenney said the Alberta government does not want to see First Nations continue to fall between the cracks and believes they should share in Alberta's prosperity. He says it's imperative to work together to lift the First Nations from poverty and dependence.

"I really hope that coming out of today we can have a renewed sense of being partners in prosperity," said Kenney.

"It's economically and morally imperative for our Indigenous people to be full partners in prosperity, including our resource wealth."

Chiefs and ministers also discussed the possibility of formalizing relationships through protocol agreements.

The Stoney-Nakoda Nation was represented at the meeting.
