The aroma was mesmerizing and the hearty soup was absolutely delicious.

For 10 years, the K to 4 Glenbow Elementary School has been putting into practice the morals of the folktale of Stone Soup.

In the spring, the school's community gathers to plant vegetables in 12 of the boxes at the community garden adjacent to the school. It's tended to over the summer by a team of volunteers and after a fall harvest, the soup is prepared in each classroom for students and staff to enjoy their labour of love.

It's traditionally served just ahead of Thanksgiving and this year took place on Oct. 6.

The school's atmosphere was charged for the day, including Kristy Cote's grade 3 class.

Soup DaySadie, Kimaya, and Deklan were among the students in Kristy Cote's class excited to enjoy the soup.

"The kids are really excited because they've been part of the planting, part of the harvesting, and part of the washing and chomping today. We've added the broth and it's been cooking all morning, and we're ready to eat."

Kimaya, Sadie, and Deklan were excited to share their favourite parts of preparing the soup.

For Kimaya, it was the chomping of the vegetables. Sadie enjoys planting the garden and particularly enjoys the potatoes. Deklan was looking forward to tasting it.

The Stone Soup story was shared with the classroom before the soup is prepared, and Kimaya was among the students who finds the story inspiring.

"They thought they didn't have any food and that's why they're not sharing, so the two visitors made stone soup for them and everybody loved it. Everyone was apologizing at the end."

Come next spring, you'll once again see the school's community come together to plant the seeds for next fall's Stone Soup.
