Lake Louise RCMP are seeking witnesses of a tree fire deliberately set on June 27 at about 9:30 p.m.

A tree was set on fire just off Sentinel Rd. in Lake Louise and has been confirmed to have been arson.

RCMP were dispatched and first responders extinguished the fire. The tree, located just off the walking path on the south side of Sentinel Rd., was removed to prevent the fire from restarting and spreading.

Lake Louise detachment commander Sgt. Susan Richter says they are trreating the incident very seriously and their investigation continues.

“There is no such thing as a minor arson.” states RCMP Sgt. Susan Richter, detachment commander of Lake Louise RCMP in a news release. “Even though our current fire risk is low due to recent rain, conditions can change quickly, any fire can spread rapidly and cause catastrophic damage.

Lindsay McPherson, external relations manager with Parks Canada, states, “Lighting a fire in any area other than a designated fire pit in the National Park is strictly prohibited and can carry a fine up to $25,000.”
