With May long weekend being the official kickoff to camping and the outdoor recreation season, you can expect to see an increase in law enforcement members out and about this upcoming weekend (May 17-20).

Cochrane RCMP, Sergeant Dave Hardy with Integrated Traffic Services says just like every May long weekend, enforcement will be increased so everyone can enjoy a safe and fun May long weekend. "The Cochrane Integrated Traffic Unit which includes the Alberta Sheriffs will be partnering with Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement through the weekend so there will be a lot of enforcement present. There will be lots of patrol vehicles out on the highways conducting operations both during the day and evening, and you can expect to see static patrols in the remote areas and into the backcountry"

Besides speeding, seatbelt infractions and distracted driving, check stops will also be a big focus and mandatory alcohol screening will be enforced. "So if you find yourself drinking, it is strongly encouraged you don't drive because there is a good chance you will be tested by a roadside screening device at one of the many check stops."

You can expect to see increased enforcement in their usual May long haunts such as around Highway 66/ McLean Creek area and around Highway 40/ Waiparous as well as headed north near TransAlta Road. "All those quarters where lots of people head into the backcountry, there is a good chance you are going to be coming through a check stop. At these check stops, we will also be checking for vehicle roadworthiness and making sure people are within compliance of the traffic regulations and vehicle equipment regulations."

In years past, drivers have been known to venture into backcountry areas with vehicles that have not been compliant with roadworthiness nor meeting the proper equipment regulation set up, but infractions have been decreasing. "It has gotten a lot better with some education and enforcement over the years. A lot of these vehicles are being trailered into the sites where they are being used which is lawful and we encourage people to do so. If you drive those vehicles into an area and you come across a check stop, there is a good chance they will be impounded and you won't be getting to your destination."

At the end of the day RCMP just want to ensure safety and enjoyment for all motorists and recreationists, and will do what they need to do to see that through. "It has definitely gotten better in terms of compliance; people know that we are out there so they are expecting to be checked and we want to keep it that way. We are not letting our guard down and cutting resources; there is going to be a lot of resources out there and provincial enforcement agencies are taking the same approach. We don't want to see things go back to the way it was six or seven years ago. The goal is for everyone to have a fun, safe weekend and enjoy the holiday."
