The Cochrane Chaos continue to prove why they are a team to be reckoned with in the Alberta Female Junior Hockey League (AFJHL) after handing the Central Alberta Amazons their first defeat of the season.

In another defensive matchup, the Chaos came back from a 1-0 deficit early in the first to score two unanswered goals and notch a 2-1 win on home ice, Nov. 17.

The Amazons took a 1-0 lead on a powerplay goal in the first when the Chaos came out a bit flat, but momentum shifted in the second and a goal by Cochrane's Summer Gibbons gave the Chaos the confidence they needed to take control. It was Breanna Martin who notched winner midway through the third, also assisted by Gibbons.

Getting the winning goal was thrilling for Martin, but she was more excited for what the 'W' means for the team.

"We were so anxious, we just wanted to beat them so bad and we pulled through," says Martin, who is one of the team's top scorers with six goals and five assists. "We did so much better than in the first [period] and it really showed in the third how well we work together."

"The energy on the bench was so good, it was awesome. it was a fun game to play."

The Chaos learned much from their first outing against the Amazons two weeks early that ended as a 1-0 win for the Amazon. Head coach Derek Loomer said they came out Friday night knowing they had to go hard, get to the paint and create opportunities to beat the league-leading Amazons.

"The girls felt they accomplished what they set out to do and were able to raise their intensity," says Loomer. "The Amazon are a really good squad, they get in your lanes, they get in your face, they're holding you up and it takes a lot of energy to fight through that. The girls, as a team, just got very determined and decided they weren't going to let them stop them and I think they are very proud that to be able to do that and are very energized."

The Chaos proved to have a strong penalty killing squad, keeping the Amazon out of range when they had the player advantage. They also kept the puck in the Amazon end for the better part of the last minute of play, eliminating any major threat for a last-ditch effort to force a tie.

Goalie Megan Parkyn's has a .957 save percentage on 22 shots and improved her GAA to 1.25 on 385 min. of play, second only to Nisa Bartlett , of the Amazons, who carries an astounding 0.89 GAA on 520 minutes of play.

Also earning assists for the Chaos were Kaylin Herman and Jenna Wasylik.

The Chaos have a firm grip on second in the south with an 8-3 record. All three of their losses came on the road and they have beaten the top teams in the north and south divisions of the nine-team AFJHL.

Next week, the Chaos aim to even up the season series against the Fort Saskatchewan Fury. The Fury are in town Sat. Nov. 25 for a 1 p.m. afternoon game at the Cochrane Arena.
