The Cochrane Skating Club wrapped up the 2019 STARSkate and Adult Championships in Airdrie on a high note.

Drawing in 600 competitors from all over Alberta, the three-day competition was the last one of the season for the Club and the attending skaters had excellent results.

Coach Karen Allison shares she was extremely pleased with the performances of all five attending skaters who participated in eight events overall. "We had a very successful weekend and we are super pleased with the Club's performance and showing at the STARSkate Championships."

With it being a Provincial competition only skaters in level STAR 4 or higher were able to participate in the three day event, however, it didn't stop our girls from making a mark on the Alberta figure skating scene. "Even with lots of competitiors our girls did really well, and I am so pleased to see them in the top third of the groups."

A top highlight over the weekend was how skater Evelyn Archibald scored in her performances. "One of our skaters, Evelyn Archibald, came out on top, and she was named the STARSkate Champion for the STAR 7 short program out of a total of 51 skaters. In addition, Evelyn was 5th place in the STAR 6 Free Skate Program and was able to earn herself a silver medal in the Leading Edge Program."

Having a couple of Cochrane skaters rank quite high in the Leading Edge Program is incredible, says Allison, as it is a combination of the skaters top three scores in the province at the STAR 6 level for the season, as well as, their final performance score from STARSkate Championships.

Overall this season has been incredibly successful for the Cochrane Skating Club, due in part to the skaters hard work and dedication. While the next few weeks skaters will see a little less intensity in their practices, Allison is already looking forward to the Club's potential in 2020. "The girls we have at the STAR 6/7 level their Free Program will hopefully be moving into the STAR 8 level next year, and hopefully they will be able to shine in that category next season. Definitely we are onward and upward, even with our younger girls. We are looking forward to just continuing to be strong on the scene and skating within Alberta."

This was the Club's fourth competition since January and although it has been tough, it has been well worth it. "That hard work has really paid off for the girls and now we're able to have a little more fun on the ice and learn some new things."

The 2019 season for the figure skaters will wrap up in a few weeks time.
