Cochrane RCMP is seeking the public's help in relation to $50,000 of missing copper wire.

Corporal Troy Savinkoff, shares as the morning got underway on March 5, they responded to a complaint of three large spools of copper wire missing from a construction project that occurred on lands still within their boundary. "There is a portion of the Stoney Trail Ring Road expansion that currently falls in Cochrane's jurisdiction that is a portion of land within Tsuu T'ina Nation so Cochrane is in charge of policing that specific area. As a result of that construction, there was some equipment left behind and unfortunately, RCMP received a complaint."

Once on site, RCMP discovered there was more to the case than just the missing copper wire. "We did have the opportunity to recover a semi-tractor truck and two trailers that were still on site that were reported stolen from Calgary just a few hours before."

Cpl. Savinkoff can't stress enough how important it is to secure property, especially, in rural areas. "We, again, are reminding members of the public that by taking some steps to secure your property that it can go along way to try and inhibit people's availability to commit this type of crime."

Copper wire theft is still something the Cochrane RCMP investigates on a regular basis but continues to try and deter. "We have done a lot of efforts working with communication industries like Telus and so forth, to try and reduce this type of crime but it still happens quite regularly."

If you have any information on this theft or any other, contact the Cochrane detachment at 403-851-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
