Town councillor Marni Fedeyko gave an emotion-charged thank you to the people who came together to save her son at the leisure pool on Feb. 10.

During last night's council meeting, Fedeyko struggled to express words of thanks to all the people who helped prevent a tragedy.

"As parents, we're very grateful for Cochrane EMS, Cochrane Fire Services and the lifeguarding staff at Spray Lakes, guest services and all those people who really helped out in that time," said Fedeyko in an interview. "Those people are very much responsible for saving our son's life."

"There's no gift that we can really give back them except for our praise of how well those processes came together. People need to realize the pool has lots of rules in place and lots of regulations and obviously it's to prevent something tragic from happening. So my praise goes out to that staff for not only doing their job but doing it well and making sure everybody is safe."

Her six-year-old son Corbyn was recovered from the bottom of the deep end by lifeguards and revived, then taken to the Alberta Children's Hospital for treatment. He was released Sunday and has made a full recovery. The total time that lapsed from jumping in to rescue the boy to him leaving in an ambulance was 14 minutes.

"He remembers trying to swim across the deep end and he couldn't physically make it. He remembers that part and then he remembers asking for help but not going down. His next recollection was riding in the ambulance and he thought it was pretty cool that the ambulance had the lights on and the sirens on all the way to the hospital."

Fedeyko and her husband Mike weren't at the birthday party and joined their son at the hospital.

"The EMS crew members were the ones that kept him calm and kept him entertained as he travelled in and that means the world to us because the hardness part is knowing you're not with them when they obviously would want their mom or dad."

Corbyn has already returned to school.

"He's back to playing Mario on video games and running around. To see him, you wouldn't know anything happened."

At the council meeting, Fedeyko also pointed out this is Random Acts of Kindness Week and encouraged residents to participate.
