An initiative which began more than a couple of years ago finally came to fruition.

Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLSFSC) now offers those in need another option when it comes to accessing the second floor of the rec centre, thanks to a variety of donors.

With the ribbon being officially cut on Friday (December 1), Karen Sampson, Staff Operations Coordinator for Seniors on the Bow (SOTB), shares the elevator is being well-utilized and those with mobility challenges are appreciating the fact that even parking is closer. "We have a few Friday morning members that have mobility issues and they have quite enjoyed being able to park a little closer and get a little closer to Seniors on the Bow; one of them is in a wheelchair so it's a great help for her and she's very happy."

Sampson says while, yes, it would have been great for the elevator access to be at the end of the hall leading to SOTB, she says feedback so far has been very positive. "The only comments I've had are all positive, especially, in regards to the upkeep and size of the elevator and how it's going to be so much easier for many people to take it at the same time. I haven't heard anything negative."

With easier access to come upstairs, Sampson is hopeful the new lift will not only attract new membership but those who let their's lapse. "We are always hoping and looking for new members and any kind of advantage we can offer to get them here to enjoy all the activities and programs... the more the merrier."

With so many events occurring this past weekend the elevator was certainly put to the test with a ringette tournament, swim meet, Christmas Farmer's market, and SOTB's annual Christmas party with 110 on the guest list.

Sampson, states any and all improvements to the rec centre are always a welcome addition. "We are happy with any improvements to Spray Lakes. Spray Lakes has been wonderful to us and hopefully, we're a good tenant to them too."
