The Kimmett Cup and The Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial Foundation were founded to honour the memory of an extraordinary young woman whose life was cut short far too soon in a tragic accident in 2008. Lindsay's family and friends chose to remember Lindsay by striving to do what she would have done. To enjoy life and help others. This year marked the 12th Annual Kimmet Cup Pond Hockey Tournament and it has grown to be an event that is embraced by the community. It is a hockey tournament that is enjoyed by dozens of teams, made possible by an army of volunteers, supported by numerous sponsors, and driven by Lindsay's spirit through her family and friends. It has become a charitable fundraising foundation that over the years has raised millions of dollars that help many deserving organizations.

Co-chairs and co-founders Jason Baserman, Joe MacLellan, and Reid Kimmett put together the first Kimmett Cup as a memoriam to remember their friend and sister. The first tournament had 20 teams that played in the pond hockey tournament. MacLellan says, "That very first year, we finished super late in the evening and it was freezing cold and there were no lights left and we actually handed out trophies on the edge of the pond. Vehicle headlights were used so people could see. Since then it's grown a lot and now there is an army of volunteers and there is a banquet in the evening where everybody can stay warm while we handout trophies and do speeches." MacLellan believes the tournament emanates two traits of Lindsay's personality; giving and competitiveness. He says Lindsay loved, "Giving back to the community, but she would have been the first one out there making sure that her team was the one winning and hoisting the trophy at the end of the day."

For Lindsay's parents Dianne and Kelly, even though the years pass, the sadness of their loss does not lessen. For Dianne, she has found solace in the foundation's fundraising partnership with The Children's Wish Foundation. She says, " Personally I feel that the Children's Wish Foundation has been a really really good fit for us. It exposes us to other families that have had struggles as well and it is so healing for us to know that we are making a positive difference in their lives. So Children's Wish is a good fit." Kelly says, "We needed to carry on Lindsay's legacy, she was going to be a doctor and she was going to do a lot of good in the world and so we are trying to do it in our own little way."

It cannot be denied that the Kimmett Cup is helping in more than a little way. This year, the 12th Annual Kimmett Cup will be donating funds raised to the following charities:

  • The Children's Wish Foundation - $125,000
  • Helping Families Handle Cancer - $4,575
  • Children's Cottage Society - $35,000
  • Cochrane Search and Rescue - $10,000
  • Cochrane Lions Club - $5,000
  • HYTES - $2,525
  • Community Lunch - St. Andrew’s United Church - $2,525

There is no doubt that the hardworking organizers of the Kimmett Cup are already planning for the 13th Annual.
