Police are reminding Albertans to guard themselves against a classic fake gold scam that has once again reared its head in Alberta.

Police advise people to not fall for a scam where a person/s peddles alleged ‘gold’ jewellery for gas money to go visit family or to get food for their families.

They usually ask people for cash in exchange for the gold, only the jewellery turns out to be fake.

“Most people will help others whether they provide money or help them out in some way and these people doing the scam take advantage of those good people,” said RCMP Corporal Jon Cormier.

He said people should not engage with these groups or individuals and use common sense if they find themselves in one of these situations.

“If it sounds too good to be true it probably is,” Cpl. Cormier said. “It’s not just gold, It can happen with any other thing, like vehicles and other things, so if it sounds too good to be true, it’s probably not.”

Cormier said if you experience one of these scams to notify police or RCMP immediately.
