Alberta Fish and Wildlife is warning of a bear roaming the Cochrane area, south of the Bow River.

This report comes one day after a resident from the neighbourhood of Jumping Pound spotted a black bear in her backyard. Multiple other social media posts surfaced today reporting bear sightings in Riversong and Riviera.

Officials are advising Cochrane residents to be ‘bear aware’ and follow these safety tips:

  • Only put waste and organics carts out the morning of collection
  • Remove food sources (bird feeders)
  • Clean up pet waste and around fruit trees
  • Keep dogs on leash
  • Carry bear spray

Members of the Fish and Wildlife team say that if there’s nothing to attract them to the area, bears will move on and search for food elsewhere.
