One of the climbers who was tragically killed in an avalanche over the weekend near Jasper was from Cochrane.

Two men were swept down a slope on Mount Andromeda in the Columbia Icefield on May 30.

Twenty-eight year-old Nathaniel Johnson from Cochrane and 30-year old Andrew Abel from Innisfail did not survive.

Both men were said to be experienced climbers.

Johnson was a Level 2 climbing gym instructor and Abel was an apprentice rock guide.

The pair were ascending the Sky Ladder, considered a moderate snow and ice route, when tragedy struck and they were carried down the the slope.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the men's partners pay off their student loans.

As of Wednesday afternoon, more than $36,400 was raised towards the goal of $100,000.

RCMP in Jasper are thanking Parks Canada Visitor Safety personnel from Banff and Jasper, the Parks Canada Search and Rescue canine team, STARS, EMS, two private helicopters and the members from the public who aided in the rescue efforts on the weekend.
