As we head into the Canada Day long weekend, Cochrane residents will see more moisture this year than most years.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Rainfall Warning for the area, saying heavy rain is expected to begin today.

Between 50 to 70 mm of rainfall could fall in the area.

"Areas in the foothills will see heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms continue this afternoon and intensify through the evening hours, " the national weather service stated.

Residents are asked to watch for possible washouts near creeks, culverts, and rivers.

"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible."

The rainfall is expected to taper off by Friday morning.
