Councillor Susan Flowers wants the town to expand its compost program to include restaurants and businesses.

She's given a notice of a motion to have council debate the idea on July 8. If successful, she wants the program to be launched no later than Oct. 15.

Flowers says a compost program for residential properties was established several years ago, and it's time to take the next step to further curb the amount of waste needlessly filling landfills.

"There was an understanding that when the composting program was originally implemented, that the program would eventually add restaurants and businesses to the practice," she states in her backgrounder on the motion. "This step will improve the community’s overall reduction of waste."

Flowers says she has spoken with a local restauranter and the Cochrane Environmental Action Committee about the proposal.
