Several Cochrane mounties were on the scene yesterday in pursuit of an erratic male driver on Highway 22 northbound.

Corporal Troy Savinkoff with the Cochrane RCMP says that the local detachment was alerted of a dangerous driver entering the Cochrane area at approximately 1:20 pm.

"We had gotten reports that this vehicle was driving in an extremely dangerous manner, very erratically," says Savinkoff. "We had heard that they previously failed to stop for police in another jurisdiction."

Savinkoff says that rather than attempting to engage the vehicle, Cochrane mounties deployed a cohort spike belt and were successful in spiking the tires of the vehicle on Highway 22 prior to it entering the town of Cochrane. "It was at that point where we had officers get behind the vehicle and attempt to stop it," says Savinkoff. "Unfortunately the vehicle failed to stop and continued to drive in an extremely dangerous manner."

Savinkoff says that as the vehicle entered the town of Cochrane, local mounties received permission to make contact with the vehicle and were successful in pushing the vehicle out of the roadway.

Local resident and photographer Olivia Passmore happened to be at the dog park across from the scene of the incident and she captured the pursuit and encounter on camera.

"I was just at the off-leash area with my dog and three police cars went past us. We saw a truck in the ditch that was firing up a lot of snow, a lot more police showed up and were blocking him from getting back on the road," says Passmore. "Then one smashed into him trying to get him to stop moving and three more smashed into him."

Corporal Savinkoff says that while some minor damage was done to civilian vehicles in the process, no injuries were sustained.

A thorough search of the vehicle was conducted and several firearms were found inside. The male driver was handed over to Calgary Police Services and the investigation is ongoing.
