Cochrane youth with aspirations of becoming firefighters have the opportunity to apply for the 2024 Calgary Fire Department Fire Cadet Program.

Applications are open until March 28 for high school students aged 15 to 18 who are interested in learning the fundamentals of firefighting, including life skills such as leadership, community involvement, teamwork, pride, and respect.

Cadets will undergo both theoretical and practical training in basic firefighting techniques and their practical application in everyday situations.

Applicants must demonstrate a willingness and ability to commit to the 18-month-long program with enthusiasm and a readiness to learn.

The program consists of three separate semesters held during the school year.

Cadets engage in online learning sessions one day per week and attend the Calgary Fire Training Academy once a month on Fridays, as well as twice a month on Monday nights for practical training in firefighting skills.

Basic firefighting skills covered include fire hose handling, search and rescue techniques, training with self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), and mastering fire ground ladder operations.
