As Cochranites struggle to stay warm during the extreme cold temperatures this week, residents are being reminded to take a few steps to ensure safety on the roads.

Dave Moore with Dave Moore Transport & Recovery says it's important to be prepared before heading out onto the highway.

"Probably the best thing that you can do to help yourself during these really deep cold snaps is to keep your fuel tank as full as you can afford to have it. A little bit of fuel conditioner if you have a big diesel truck and a little bit of gas line anti-freeze if you have a gasoline powered car."

Some other advice: have an emergency roadside kit in your vehicle that includes items like an ice scraper, jumper cables, de-icer, blankets, nonperishable foods, a flashlight with working batteries and a cell phone charger.

If you do get into trouble, Moore says it's important to know that there are options.

"If you're stranded and you need help, the best thing that you can do to help yourself is call around for the best eta for a tow truck that you can find. If you're relying on the roadside assistance club, those guys work on volume and they might not be able to get to you as quickly as possible."

Moore says they've been steady over the last few days but they're always available to help.

"We've been busy, but we'll make time for you."
