Everyone is asking the question, did we break a snowfall amount record on Monday and Tuesday?

According to Blaine Lowry with Environment Canada, Cochrane’s closest amounts are measured at the Calgary International Airport. There on Monday, 12 cm of snow was measured and on Tuesday 15.2 cm of snow fell.

The two-day snowfall event measured a total of 27.2 cm.

Lowry says that while those two daily amounts were a record for those dates, it is somewhat misleading as there have been other days in December where we have seen more snowfall amounts.

What is more significant is that we don't typically see this much snow, in our area, in December. We have to go way back to the 1970s to witness a two-day event over 20 centimetres in December.

People here in Cochrane may argue that we received more snow than the airport, but that is what Environment Canada bases their data on.

While the amount of snow is significant, what seems to be the bigger story is the perfect timing for beautiful white Christmas.
