Five members of the Peewee AA Bow Valley Timberwolves will be playing in the Alberta Winter Games on two different teams.

Cochrane goalie Ethan Mann will be playing between the pipes for the Zone 1 team while his counterpart Connor MacKenzie, of Canmore, is blocking shots for the Zone 2 team.

The other three players will be adding an offensive punch to the Zone 2 team. Forwards Kadon McCann, of Cochrane, Connor MacKenzie, of Canmore, and Leo Johnson, of Banff, were all selected.

Another seven members of the team participated in the tryouts.

Timberwolves head coach Kyle McLaughlin says about 150 players from across southern Alberta tried out for the two teams.

"I'm certain that all of them were very competitive, but it's tough when they were basically looking at kids from all of southern Alberta."

"We're proud of all of our kids that tried out, and we're definitely excited for the kids that got chosen."

McLaughlin was one of the 13 evaluators of the players for Hockey Alberta but was not involved in making the final selection.

"It was a big honour to be invited by Hockey Alberta to be an evaluator," he says.

He says the coaches were looking for a combination of skills.

"They were building a team. They were looking for certain things, and we're very fortunate that they really liked what they saw in our players."

Earlier this month, three Cochrane female players were selected to play in the winter games for two different teams. Forwards Raedyn Spademan and April Klarenbach are on the Zone 2 team, and Anjali Simms will be playing defense for Zone 4.

In all, 160 male, and 120 female players will be playing in the games. There are eight male teams and six female teams.

In all, some 2,600 young athletes, their coaches, support staff, families, spectators and supporters athletes are expected to rendezvous for the winter games, being hosted by Airdrie, Feb. 14-17.
