The Lioness are having their last act of service for 2016.

The Cochrane Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion have generously donated money to the Cochrane Lionesses for 78 care bags for seniors at Bethany Care Centre. These are surprise gifts for the seniors were delivered by the service club on December 22.

The bags will include warm socks, soft candies, toilette, tea, something to read and a new addition this year, stuffed animals for each resident. Some residents of Cochrane have donated gently used stuffed animals which prove to be a great comfort for many seniors.

Another item that will be delivered to the seniors centre are 9 blankets called "fidget blankets". Fidget blankets are warm quilts with various items, such as zippers, buttons, bells and feathers that will keep seniors minds busy and hands occupied. The staff of the seniors center will sometimes hang these blankets on the wall, encouraging stretching and exercising as the residents will reach for items.

The blankets were made by Eileen Stone, Cochrane Lioness Club, Lioness, who was honored to be able to help. She says the happiness it brings the seniors makes it all worthwhile.

"The bags are filled with little gifts they can enjoy, share, or give away. And they are so delighted to get them; you have no idea how big the smiles are on their faces."

Jason Johnston, Recreation Therapist, Bethany Care Centre, says this is a great way for the residents to connect to the outside community, and makes them feel very special.

"The gifts are wonderful, but the social interaction, visiting and the saying hello is what really touches their hearts."
