Cochrane didn't see much in the way of snowfall for January, and now just four days into the month of February we seem to be making up for lost time!

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for Cochrane and the surrounding areas over the last two days, which saw a total accumulation of about 15 cm of snow.

Terri Lang is a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada and she says that Cochranites can expect more active weather starting tonight. Lang says that and by tomorrow morning we will be in the thick of it, which could lead to some poor driving conditions.

"With that snow around, it can really grease up the roads," says Lang. "Make sure that you're checking highway conditions before heading out and making sure that your car is prepared and having that safety kit in your car."

Lang says that the snow is expected to continue for the next several days.

"Snowfall amounts will vary quite a bit but the heaviest snowfall will probably be on Friday, so we're looking at maybe 5 - 8 cm," says Lang. "Then it will just continue to snow lightly. It looks like that will continue into Sunday and maybe taper off on Monday."

While we are expecting to get a break from the snow by the start of next week, Lang says that is when the "really cold arctic air will move in."

"By Monday you'll be well into the cold air and with that comes the risk of higher windchills and we get into that dangerous category," says Lang. "The coldest air looks to be settling in on Tuesday and into Wednesday where temperatures could really drop into that minus 30 mark or so."

Lang says that by next week, the risk of frostbite will increase significantly and she recommends limiting time spent outdoors and not exposing bare skin to the elements.
