The Medicine Hat Cubs aren't about to wave the white flag yet.

Last night, the Cubs outplayed the Gens on the way to a 5-1 win in Medicine Hat. The win ties the HJHL south division semifinal series 1-1.

Brandon Aab scored the only goal of the night for the Gens from Ryan Davis and River Ross in the first period to end the stanza in a 1-1 deadlock.  Then the wheels fell off.

The Cubs showed a hustle missing from their last few meetings with the Gens. They scored four unanswered goals in the next two periods.

Gens head coach Kurtis Jones knew the Cubs were going to come hard and discouraged his team from coming into the game overconfident.

"When you play a team like that, and you beat them 6-0 back-to-back, they're going to change something, and we have to be prepared for it. We just weren't there last night."

He says the Cubs took a page out of the Gens book by coming hard, finishing every check, and improving their forecheck.

Dawsen Savage, the Cubs' top goalie, was back between the pipes after missing Game One.

"They play better in front of Savage," says Jones. "They know they can take some chances because they are confident in his play."

Gens goalie Erik Garber is coming off back-to-back shutouts against the Cubs. Jones says Sunday's score doesn't fairly represent how he played in Medicine Hat.

"Garber played sensational again. That could have been an 8-1 game, but Garbs played very, very well."

He says the Gens now need to mentally prepare for Thursday's game here at the Cochrane Arena.

"After every game, you have to 'check game' and refocus. You can't get mad, you can't get frustrated, you just have to hit the reset button and get back to work."

With the added punch in the Cubs' play, Thursday's game at the Cochrane Arena should be a thriller.

Game time is 8 p.m.
