On Saturday, June 5, the RCMP Major Crimes Unit arrested a 16-year-old male from Stoney Nakoda First Nation and charged him with the second-degree murder of 19-year-old Nathaniel Jake Beaver also of Stoney Nakoda First Nation. 

On Wednesday, June 2, Cochrane RCMP was called to a reported stabbing on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation. Upon arrival, police located a male who had suffered serious injuries. First aid was administered prior to the arrival of EMS.

Emergency Medical Services attempted to resuscitate the 19-year-old male but were unsuccessful and the male was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit had taken carriage of the investigation with the assistance of the Cochrane RCMP and Stoney Nakoda RCMP. The RCMP Forensic Identification Services Unit was also called in to investigate.

Following an autopsy report on Friday, June 4 the manner of death was determined to be a homicide. 

In accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the youth charged will not be named.

Following a judicial hearing, the male youth was remanded into custody and is scheduled to attend Cochrane Provincial Youth Court on June 8, 2021.
