Bruce Kendall has tried to go through the regular channels at Rocky View County (RVC) with no success and is now taking it to the county council in hopes of getting action.

The county owns land adjacent to the proposed Greystone development and the RVC councillor for division 9 believes the county should be participating in area structure plan (ASP) process. He introduced a notice of motion at the RVC council meeting, June 13, seeking RVC's participation. The discussion will take place at the June 27 RVC council meeting.

It may seem late in the game to become involved, but Kendall previously attempted to garner interest from the Rocky View administration with no luck.

"I've been trying to get it done without having to come before council but I've been unsuccessful," says Kendall. "We need direction from council and that's the reason for the motion."

"I think it's important to the county that they participate and be part of the ASP as opposed to sitting and waiting. I'm not saying they should sell it today but I'm saying it certainly will enhance the value of it. When we go to sell it we don't want to sell it as a completed gravel pit in a residential community."

He believes in the long-term it's important to be involved now so the town has a clear picture of how that land will interface with the developments being pursued in that area.

"I think it's a great opportunity for the town and the county to work together for the betterment of that riverfront area."

The 30-acre strip is located between the proposed Greystone development on the Burnco pit, now reaching the end of its life, and the riverfront area. It also includes the land leased to the Bow Rivers Edge Campground (BREC), jointly operated by the Rotary and Lions Club.

Kendall says there is a proposal coming forward to county council, likely before the summer recess, on BREC that may involved the long sought after expansion or the outright purchase of the land by BREC, though he didn't elaborate. Discussions are currently taking place between the county and BREC.

The Greystone ASP is currently being circulated for feedback and they held their most recent open house on June 7. The 30-day external circulation period ends July 10. The developers hope to re-submit their proposal to council in August and anticipate a public hearing will follow in September.
