Saluting outstanding citizenship and supporting important community causes is the trademark of Community Builder galas spearheaded by Dan Kroffat.

This year, well-known Canadian actor-singer Tom Jackson will be honoured while raising funds to help the Cochrane Activettes cover costs of their food bank expansion.

"It's another worthy cause, another worthy candidate," says Kroffat.

The charity event is being held on June 19 at the Cochrane RancheHouse.

Kroffat says Jackson is known for his support of humanitarian causes, including food banks.

"He's an individual who has been associated with food banks for the last 30-40 years, and he addresses their needs right across Canada. So, having him here locally to help us raise money to help the Activettes complete this initiative is quite exciting."

"That expansion is so meaningful because it will address the needs of more and more people who are in need, so I think it's a real benefit to the community."

Kroffat has worked with Jackson on several causes over the years, including the Open the Borders campaign during the BSE crisis in the early 2000s.

He admires the man.

"He just quietly comes forth and does what he can in a supportive role. Each Christmas, he travels across Canada doing the Huron Carole that he's very famous for, and he's always raising money, donating his time and his efforts to help communities."

Kroffat says he's fortunate to have a wealth of talent on his organizing committee. It includes members of the newly-formed Young Professional Rotary Club and the Activettes.

He's also received generous support from realtor Shelley Kramer, GM dealer Gary Sartorio, and Lina's Italian Market to cover the cost of the venue and the meal.

Further donations are welcomed.

"We're very proud of the fact that we've been able to give 100 per cent of what we've raised to the benefactor. That goes a long way when people make donations or offer auction items."

Those wanting to donate can contact Kroffat at 403-850-1001.

It's the fourth Community Builder charity event organized by Kroffat that started by honouring Cochrane Eagle founder Jack Tennant.

After that, it grew in magnitude. The last two have raised substantial funds in support of the Big Hill Haven, and the Girl Guides' Camp Jubilee.

Tickets are $75 and can be purchased at Cochrane Toyota.

Only 210 tickets are available, and it has sold out the last two years.
