It may seem a bit early to be throwing around the ‘S word’ in August, but yesterday Aug. 22, the Rockies did see snow.

An unseasonably cold and rainy event took place across Alberta, as an upper low pushed across the province, leaving a swath of precipitation and some strong winds.

Kirk Torneby, Meteorologist with Environment Canada says while the precipitation was mostly rain, it did snow in higher elevations.

“Anything above 2400 meters saw some snowfall, on the webcam we saw snow in Lake Louise as well as Sunshine," he says. "It doesn't look like they got anything measurable, it looked really spotty on the webcam.”

Torneby shares snow in August isn't that rare.

“Even July isn’t particularly free of snow, it always surprises us when it comes early, obviously we think a little bit more about it in September and October, but it's never unheard of to see snowfall in August.”

He explains although a fall/spring like system moved through Alberta, summer is still not over.

"We are still in August, the dog days of summer will continue on. The system that moved through it was a very powerful one, as we move into the fall obviously we always get those warm up events and cooler events."

Generally the Cochrane area does not see measurable snowfall amounts until October.
