If you attended Cochrane's Remembrance Day ceremonies last weekend you would have noticed the large group of local cadets actively participating in the town's events. The 952 West Jet Air Cadet Squadron was one of the groups involved.

Captain Rick Enns says the group is happy to support local initiatives as well as the local legion.

"We were involved in helping to run the parade as well as participating in the ceremony, we participated in the march and previous to that you would have seen us at various places throughout the town selling poppies for the legion. We also support the legion in many other ways, they are one of our main partners in running our squadron."

The West Jet Air Cadet Squadron has a formed partnership between the Department of National Defense and the Air Cadet League of Canada,
the local program is comprised of over 100 cadets from Cochrane and area between the ages of twelve and eighteen.

Enns says that in addition to teaching the cadets about Canada and how to be good citizens that the program is designed towards teaching the cadets about aviation and giving them an appreciation towards the aviation industry in both the military and civilian side.

Enns also says that his involvement as a captain makes him proud to help shape local youth. "What I see, in almost 25 years in the industry that that the air cadet program is really great at building young professionals. Whether the cadet wants to have a career in aviation or not; we teach lifelong skills and how to become responsible, young professionals."

Enns says that the air cadet program is one of the best kept secrets in Canada, and that they are always open to taking new recruits.

"The air cadet program is a no cost program to individuals, all we ask is that they do participate as best as they can, that they experience all that we have to offer, and we'll have them do simple things such as maintain their uniform when they receive it and be involved."
