UPDATE : Helping Hands Society of Cochrane & Area announced on Friday that they have secured a location! The Free Food Shed will be set up at Cochrane's St. Andrew United Church.

Original story follows.

Helping Hands Cochrane is working towards bringing a Free Food Shed to town to make sure no one in our community has to ever go hungry.

Chairra Nicolle, The Executive Director for Helping Hands Society of Cochrane & Area says that Cochrane would be joining a long line of communities who have already embraced this project. “The idea behind the free food shed actually came from a movement that's across the world right now. It's free fridges to take and leave food, just like the free libraries.”

“Maybe you're going on vacation and you bought a little too much, you can donate it there and somebody can come by and use it up. It's not just for people in need, it's for anybody in the community.”

The shed would stand at about 8 feet by 4 feet and would feature everything from shelves and pantry space, to a fridge and freezer.

“This free food shed would allow to fill in those gaps for people when they just need a little bit, not a full hamper, or maybe it's in the evening you need a little bit extra food for your family, it's there and then we can also rely on our community members to support and sponsored as well.” Nicolle says

Helping Hands is searching for the perfect location for the project. The hope is for something that is easily assessable and close to a COLT stop. “We need some location to identify and so what that means is we're looking for a place that's willing to donate maybe some electricity we actually have an electrical company in Cochrane who has reached out to us to support the connection of the electricity but we need someone to support the electricity and also a property to hold the shed.”
