Why is your check engine light on?

We have all been there, driving along, enjoying some music, when that dreaded orange light pops up on your dashboard. 

Nothing can change a day from good to bad faster than the check engine light.

Do you pull over and instantly call a local mechanic? Ignore it? Do you hope it will turn off the next time you hit a pothole?

As someone who usually drives older vehicles, that little orange light has become almost a staple in my life.
