The Cochrane Skating Club wrapped up their regular season at the United Cycle Sunsational Invitational in Edmonton this past weekend (April 20-22).

Personal bests and podium finishes were seen by the majority of the nine, STAR 4 (and up) skaters that attended.

Coach Karen Allison shares the Club shined. "It was a really solid weekend overall. We had six events podium finish which is pretty awesome, I am feeling really good and proud at the end of this season."

It was a big week overall, says Allison. "We had a couple skaters land their axle jumps; Kaitlyn Eiserman landed her axle jump in her first competition of the season this past weekend so that was a big moment for her and skater Alexis Brassington landed her axle this week which was another big moment as she has been working on it for some time. Our skater, Jase Ritter who just started skating again 8 weeks ago after taking a very long break from skating due to relocation and injury,  prepared and trained a Gold Freeskate program, competed, and earned a silver medal; so that was pretty cool. And in addition to that our long-time skater Sydney Perron, who I have coached since she was eight years old had her final competition of the season and maybe of her career as she will be focusing on University in the fall. She went out and skated her Gold Freeskate event and earned a personal best score and also finalized being undefeated for the season in this Gold Freeskate event; we were thrilled and it was an emotional moment for us."

Allison also mentioned, Mairyn Dumanowski, who achieved two personal bests in both a short and free program.

Today (April 25) is the last big testing day for the Club in Springbank and Friday morning is the last skate before the Cochrane Skating Club breaks for the month of May. "We have a nice little break to recoup physically/mentally and then get fired up for our June skating. In summer, we are looking into the possibility of trying to run a summer program a couple weeks in July and August but are our skaters that train all year will do drop in figure skating at Spray Lakes."

Looking ahead to next season, Allison is hopeful to revive the synchro skating program this fall. "I think there is a lot of potential in a Club and community like Cochrane to run a program such as synchro skate because it is a recreational program that is great for kids who love skating but aren't interested in being individuals on the ice but prefer being with their friends."

With so many young, upcoming skaters doing well; Allison is excited to see where the future of figure skating is going in Cochrane. "There is lots of great skating happening in our club right now so I am looking forward to an exciting 2018/19 season."
